Barnwood Flooring: Reclaim landfill wood into sustainable flooring

I just premiered a new prefab green home, The Sonoma House, at the Auburn Home Show in May, and had the opportunity to work with various contractors on green indoor home finishes.  My favorite project was the flooring.  We salvaged old barnwood that was going to the land fill.  After installing and sanding, a mix of red wine and vinegar was mopped over the top of the bare floor and allowed to soak into the wood grain overnight.  The wood color is amazing! The next day, the top was lightly sanded which allowed the dark grain, knot holes, worm holes, etc to show.  It was definately one of the favorite aspects of the home by the viewing public!

Re: Barnwood Flooring: Reclaim landfill wood

The home was 1200sqft at $95 K. Not bad for a green prefab!  The barnwood flooring was less per square foot than cork! And local, sustainable, and reclaimed!

Cool!  A little pricey... (as the anchor commented)

I have to congratulate you for calmly enduring the reporter...  How many jumbo lattes do you think she pounded down before the report? [wink]

Couldn't they get a couple of straight guys to comment on the bathroom floor & the TV electronics? (sorry,  it was just the "natury" comment)
