Re: Neighborhood Electric Vehicles...NEV...LSV...ZEV...GEM...

I like NEV's, and several people in Central Illinois own them.

Illinois law, however, makes it dicey to own one -- better to own a Trike bodystyle (motorcycle by law) or a full fledged EV:

NEV's can't drive on roads with greater than 35mph speed limit.  They are ILLEGAL in Illinois, unless each local jurisdiction approves their use (County, City, Township, etc).  Even if they are approved by the local jurisdiction, they still cannot be driven on OR ACROSS state roads -- so if you have a state road going through your town, you can't legally get to the other side...

Of course I doubt that any cop would bust you for it, but if you had an accident crossing a state road, I'm sure the insurance would try to get out of it...

Also, from driving in Illinois, most folks go +5 to +10 mph over the speed limit, so on a 35mph road, figure they'll go 40mph... and you max out at 20???  Talk about road congestion/hazard as people 'pick and roll' around you to pass... to put it into perspective, a bicycle has more rights to the road than an NEV.
