Don't think American numbers are any better, but in Canada we dump about  158 billion litres of untreated sewage into the oceans from 5 major cities alone - this doesn't include small towns and single homes.

In addition to that North America leaks 16X as much oil as the Exon Valdez into the oceans every year from auto engines, hydraulic equipment, spay oil cans and washed from mechanic's hands. 1 qt. of oil can pollute 250,000 gallons of water. Water flows downhill. 

I suspect that China does that much damage X10 with their population of 1,095,351,713 plus.  It's no wonder that face cream harvestors are having such a hard time finding clean seaweed to make their products from and fish harvests are diminishing - with drag nets and all - but that's another problem.
