Athena, you may be interested in an article and film about how Cuba radically changed its system of agriculture after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today, an estimated 50 percent of Havana's vegetables come from inside the city, while in other Cuban towns and cities, urban gardens produce from 80 to more than 100 percent of what they need. Cuba was also forced to come up with innovative solutions for transportation and health care. Cuba is not perfect. It is not a democracy, and it has its share of other problems. It has, however, taken some remarkable steps in recent years in terms of making its cities sustainable.
