Jacques Cousteau ,the Human ,the Orchid and the Octopus

I learned so many thing about Jacques that I never knew before.
He wanted to become a pilot but was almost killed in a car accident.
The French navy gave him the chance to learn and explore.
The so called vast Oceans are only 1/ 640th of the earth. Of that only 1 % has life and is drinkable.
The Air around us is also very fragile. We only have a 4 mile are of usable air around the Earth. Higher is much to thin to support life.
Nuclear has safety concerns that he would never take and he had gone places and taken risk more than anyone on the Earth. He gives great examples of the safety concerns and accidents at Nuclear locations.
He also tells about the high risk of oil drilling. It is happening more and more in deeper seas. He says it is already a disaster and more is coming.
He questions how we can not speak up to the environmental damage that has and is being done ! He tells that if we keep silent we are just as much at fault as the people making the pollution. We much speak up !

This was an amazing evironmental book. It tells about how Jacques Cousteau first got interested in diving and underwater research. He also invented many underwater technology ideas like SUBA the self contained underwater apparatice used by all divers today along with the auqua lung and even underwater living stations and bathespheres. This paragraph in french below, in honor of Jacques , one of our greatest environmental hero's !
The most amazing part of the book is how he has seen pollution and it's affects underwater. How over fishing has wiped many fragile fish populations and even the fragile air we breath.
He also tells of the problems with nuclear power and how it is a rish we should never have. He gave examples of the accidents that have already happened and how we weere told they never could happen just a short time before.
Jaques even tells of the didsters of the space rocket challenger and how upset it made him. He knows the risk of exploring. He is very aware of how the entire world works.
He is really brilliant with many true life stories that left me on the edge of my seat. Jacques and Ed Begely Jr would be best of friends and have many of the same clear veiws of how we should live.
11 chapters of facts and stories about our entire world and the Silent underwater world he knows well.

We loved this book so much we bought a copy for a gift to our science teacher mother in law. She will love it.
