aptera sure looks like a potential winner for the automotive xprize

Good idea, and nope, you can't do it with a bicycle... unless you can get it up to 80mph as a minumum max speed (alternative class requires two passengers minimum, and I think they have to be side-by-side, not in-line). Don't think even Lance can do that on a flat.
Closest thing to a bicycle in the X-Prize competition is the TwikeIV (new design to meet the 80mph requirement), in the alternative class.
The X-prize rules are horrid; they reinforce the idea that you must have a vehicle that 'goes at least 80' and 100 miles per 'fillup/charge' when infact most Americans go less than 50 miles a day at speeds betwee 35-50 mph.
It's really quite a disappointment if you're familiar with the industry: the bar is set really, really low as far as emissions/green-ness, and ridiculously high as far as range and speed.

I wonder why TREK hasn't entered the contest.
-They make vehicles that get over 600 mpg when you take the energy in a gallon of gas fuel compared to the caloric amount of bio food you use to fuel a car.
-They sell way more than 10,000 of them.
-If you get Lance Armstrong to power them they have amazing speed and almost unlimited range.
-Anyone can use them in almost any location, just look at mountain bikers.
-You can even make them 3 or 4 wheeled for groups of 2 or more riders..
I'll have to check ALL the rules and see if I could enter them and win a few million dollars to make more bikes. I think they are the most efficient machine ever invented. You even get healthier each time you use it.

Have you seen the new contest to encourage the development of a super efficient vehicle ? It's called the automotive X-Prize. Companies have to enter the contest which is a $1,000 fee. Then to win they have to make and sell 10,000 efficient vehicles that get over 100 mile per gallon or the equivalent in what ever form of energy they use.
This has worked in the past to make efficient items and seems very positive compared to mandates or other forced rules like the CAFE standards.
Recently they listed the first 30 companies that have entered. 2 are from my state of Arizona so I'll have to check them out. Look and see if any are from your area. Who knows you could become part of the team. Below is the link and a list of the first 30 companies so you won't have to leave here to check it out.
