soy based wood perservative

Randy

Has anyone used any of the soy based wood perservatives? If so, I would
be very interested to know what you thought about it's performance and
durability.

The only Pressure treated wood I have ever used is the real nasty copper arsenic stuff - and if you look at the little tag stapled on the end you will see that the guarantee requires you to return the whole uncut board with the tag attached for a refund claim.

I have built fences and outdoor structures from white and red pine, red and white cedar and from pressure treated lumber and there ain't much difference in durability one from the other.

The fungus that decays wood needs air and a little bit of water.  This condition exists at ground level so that is where the posts rot off.  Keep wood dry and it lasts forever (almost).

All fences/decks last about 18 years.  Caps or slopes on tops of posts slow down end rot.  It keeps them dry. and setting posts in gravel so that critical area at ground level stays drier makes a more durable product.

And as ct says, linseed oil or tung oil has been used for years to protect wooden farm machinery.

If something has only been on the market for a year nobody can claim that it works as a preservative any better than anything else - or nothing.

Actually, this salad dressing just might be less tasty to the wee beasties that do so much damage.

As you mentioned, moisture is the culprit. That's why creosote soaked pine trees worked so well as telephone poles & railroad ties.

When I was a kid I convinced my father to let me boil the end of a fence post in paraffin wax.  We planted it in '72, and in '97 it was still untouched by decay... 10 years later and it's still showing no sign of it's age...

The only other supports that have shown the same durability have been the 2" steel pipes in concrete.

Soy oil isn't paraffin, but if the additives can keep the oil from moving and allow it to polymerize, if could stay there almost as long as the wax.

Kona,

I went to the "livinggreen" website, but didn't see anything on the soya-based preservatives.

Does anyone have links on them, to share?

I've only encourtered the silicate-based ones, currently in developement...

Try this site. www.soyclean.biz/wood_sealer.asp
I'm sure I have seen another manufacturer  but this is the one that comes to mind.

I looked at the MSDS, it contains Oil and Water, plus proprietary ingredients...

It's salad dressing Smiling

I bet somebody noticed that the wood of the back porch near the grill is always just a little more solid, and a little less sun-bleached, where the cook spills the marinade time after time Eye-wink

Hi Randy -

I have a friend that said it worked perfectly and infact probably better than the harsher chemical based preservative - check out www.livinggreen.com

Good luck!
