Shades of Green

Lately, you cannot open a newspaper or watch the television without someone speaking to "Being Green."   As a Green-collar worker myself, I am very wary of companies who claim to be "GREEN, NATURAL, ECO, ORGANIC" unless they have some type of certification.  In the general building industry, there are some reliable organizations who are very dedicated to preserving the integrity of those who dedicate themselves to healthy green building standards.  Look for the seal by ENERGY STAR, USGreenBuildingCouncil (LEED), Build It Green (GreenPoint).  All of these companies have benchmarks in construction which must be met to obtain their "Green" certification.   This will help you to avoid companies who are "Green Washing", or "saying and not doin" as my grandma used to say.

Each of these sites have a builder directory and a wealth of information for green building:

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

While I agree wiith you in principle, the nagging reality is that there are just as many self proclaimed certifiers of 'green-ness' as there are practitioners and an equal share of perpetrators.

In my state of CT, the legislature was bamboozled into accepting Fuel Cells as a renewable green technology.  Here in CT (and most ohter parts of the world) fuel cells are run on natural gas.  What they fail to explain is that while the FC itself only produces H2O as a waste, the reformer that feeds the FC emits all of the Carbon from the CH4 (methane) as CO2...  A classic case of look over here while I saw this pretty little lady in two!
