    On Not Driving

Being “green” is not so difficult when it is how you live and when it is all you know.

Born and raised in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, I am the eldest of an uneducated and non-English speaking single mother who never learned how to drive, so I grew up without a car.

Although I am college educated, and I speak English, I also do not drive. I have never had a driver's license and at this point, I don't expect I will ever need one. Next year, I turn 50.

Instead, I use mass transit, I walk, take cabs and carpool on occasion, but mostly I ride my bicycle to do most errands and to go to work, carrying groceries, laundry and anything else in a backpack. In spite of a couple of serious accidents in 2006, I am back riding.

My question...If “Cash for Clunkers” is available to environmentally conscious drivers, what type of credit is available to someone like me who is committed to the idea that another car on the road, especially an L.A. road, is of no benefit to the environment (pollution), to fellow drivers (possible danger) or to me (cost)?

    Re: On Not Driving

an automobile is essential to everyone, and for now there are environment-friendly cars available, and with a reasonable price. And not only did they are environment-friendly, but also they are using recycled materials on the parts used, esp. from chrysler auto parts. The idea of the "cash for clunkers" program is to sell old cars to buy hybrids and electric cars that are not only environment-friendly but also efficient on the road. so if i were you learn to drive, have a license and buy a car that is friendly to the environment and to your budget.

My bicycle is very safe for the others on our planet, it's healthy and uses no fuel. It just takes a little effort. It's the most eco and efficient transportation in the world.

    Re: On Not Driving

I though about it when saw some videos at a hip hop music online magazine (link enclosed) - and they got bunch of cars, cigars, cash... never heard them rapping or singing about anything "green"...

What you think? they even care to make any change in our planet?

    Re: On Not Driving

The Cash for Clunkers somehow urged drivers to shift their old cars to more efficient and environment-friendly car like the Chevy Volt. Many electric car fans, get a load of the Chevy Volt. The Chevy Volt is the long awaited GM electric car. It's technically not a full electric, it's a plug in hybrid, as it does have a small gas motor, but the fuel efficiency is a Prius humiliating 230 mpg. It has a range of 40 miles on electric only, depending on weight and if the air conditioning is engaged, a total range of 300 miles, and you must charge it at least once a day. No word on whether Cash for Clunkers will be around for it. Still, if you don't want to need cash advances for gas, the Chevy Volt might be worth the $40,000 sticker.
