Rural Oklahoma, green ignorant!!!
I've lived in Altus Oklahoma for over 12 years now. It has never had a recycle program during this time. So I've tried to find out why or at least get some interest started to get a more "green" environment thinking.
I contacted the local school superintendent via e-mail thinking that if they were to get the kids in school interested in recycling. They in turn would get the parents involved and than the city would have to follow. But I got no response from the school superintendant. So I e-mailed the mayor asking about a recycling program for the city of Altus. (POP. about 21,000) I did get a response from him. That basically said. There is lots of land avaiilable for more land fills and it wasn't economical for the city.
What a bunch of crap!! I guess he doesn't realize that this part of Oklahoma sits on top of the largest aquafirs in the world. But I'm not really surprised considering the education system in Oklahoma. So all of the polution generated from the land fill is seeping into the aquafir.
How do I make a bigger impression on these people?

Re: Rural Oklahoma, green ignorant!!!
I have lived in Chickasha, OK for about 5 years now and find the same thing over here. A lot of people in this part of the world seem to make it a point to be strongly anti green. That said, I wish there was a way to set up some kind of recycle program/public composting program down here or if there is something going on outside the critical Okie eye find out more so I can get involved. If I had the $$$ I would get something started myself but that is not the case. Anyway, I think the first thing that needs to happen in OK is to start changing minds.
Re: Rural Oklahoma, green ignorant!!!
I would like to throw my two cents in, I actually have a recycling company in Oklahoma city that recycles Paper, Cardboard, Wood, All Metals, All Plastics 1-7, Computers, Monitors, Ink Cartridges, Cell Phones and batteries. I am looking to expand into the rural communities, and i need all the help i can get. Have the mayors of the Cities call me so i can get something worked out. My goal is by the end of the year have a recycling facilities in Lawton, Ardmore, Clinton, Tulsa or Broken Arrow, Muskogee and somewhere north not sure where to place it. I will recycle your materials and i know that Oklahoma is Ignorant but i am trying very hard to change that. www.greenoptionsenvironmental.com see what i can do for you!
Re: Rural Oklahoma, green ignorant!!!
Have you considered starting your own recycling company? I know that there are many avenues to secure at least some income as a result of getting people interested in your ideas.
Aluminum cans-aluminum smelters, scrap steel and ferrous materials-raw metal companies, plastic bottles-carpet companies, paper-paper companies, and even kitchen grease for biodeisel.
Just a thought.

I would continue to communicate to others and get them to write the mayor as well. Start your own grass roots movement. Also, it is spelled "aquifer". So make sure if you are communicating by writing to others you have it spelled correctly or they will not take you seriously.
