Geothermal & Ground Source Power

I Just joined this forum in the hope of getting some advice about my ideas for reducing my energy costs at home, since my landlord refuses to install central heating and I cannot afford to pay for anything more efficient I'm stuck with expensive to operate electric panel heaters in a cold damp ground floor flat.

I've been hearing some mention of the ability to get power via geothermal energy from a ground source heat pump. Does anyone know exactly how this works. How much power could you actually output from this? Is this viable for supplying any real-world power options (e.g. home heating or supplying energy for small power supplies)?
