Green Garden & Yard

Square Foot Gardening

I'm kind of surprised no one in this forum has mentioned this yet -- about 18 years ago, I finally got a house with a yard in Portland, OR. I wanted a garden, but knew nothing about gardening, so of course, I went looking for a book to tell me how to do it. I fortunately stumbled upon the original "Square Foot Gardening" book by Mel Bartholomew, and was so grateful I did. With his methods you can grow an abundance of food in a very small space, and it doesn't matter what kind of soil you have.

Has anyone used any of the soy based wood perservatives? If so, I would
be very interested to know what you thought about it's performance and
durability.

Backyard agriculture

This is my first post here and I must say I am very happy to find a place where like-minded people can share knowledge and ideas. My neighbor and I, both hobby gardeners, have decided to experiment to see just how much of our own food we can raise. This season we have supplied all of our own tomatoes, beans, various squashes and herbs. I have begun fig trees and he has started a pear tree. Our goal is eventually to expand and produce as close as possible to 100% of our fruits, vegetables, herbs and some nuts. I guess that's about as local as it gets.

global warming can be reduced by trees

We've all heard about global warming and the devastating effects in places with glaciers.

I've also be told that if we planted lots of trees in the farm belt of America it could help cool and even out the temperatures. Sounds like Johnny appleseed had it right all along. Imagine the difference plants could make all over the USA.

In Chicago and many other areas they have green roof programs. This could help reduce the heat island affect big cities have.
